They tell you one thing and sell you another.

Bought a 2003 Fiat Punto at the start of the year. Only had 24,000 miles on it. Great deal, until I put about 2,000 miles on it. Driving up a hill from the beach and the engine cut out. No pressure in the brake, ended up in the bushes. Turns out the exhaust snapped off.

The light for “check engine” comes on at random times. After a while, you start to ignore it. Once you ignore it, it goes away. On initial inspection, I discovered the engine was overfilled with oil. Way overfilled.

Now, after thhe recent heavy rain, the sun roof is leaking… badly! The seal on the sunroof is broken causing the rain to flow in, run along the headliner and onto the back seat. Soaked the car.

Needless to say, I won’t be buying from them again. Don’t know if the car was clocked or just treated like crap before me.

Dropping the car into the garage to be fixed in a few days, and they don’t have a courtesy car to give me. They promise the world and deliver a heap of steaming crap.

I’m just glad that I’ve got a 12 month warranty.

    Just to update you. Got the car back today. They re-bonded the seal on the sunrooof… and broke the grill on the speaker and snapped an internal panel in half.

    What the hell were they doing???

    Hey, in responce to the above statement.
    Under any terms of guarantee at a reputable car dealership, the guarantee how ever its duration covers 2 areas. Faults incurred aside from wear and tear,so I think you were lucky getting the exhaust done by them. As for the yellow engine light coming on, the oil should have no effect on that. The Oil light should have come on if ever too high/low the oil level is or if the pressure is at the wrong setting. As for the best area of a guarantee, if the dealer cannot repair your car, you are entitled to a replacement vehicle to the same value or less.

    A great thing to remind people buying cars during this credit crunch is that garages will be doing their best to maintain good customer service will their clients. The days are gone when you would have to chase them, the table is turning and now it is those garages who will be chasing you, to maintain and keep your custom.

    Regarding the yellow light, I would mention this to them and have them correct it ( make sure they dont take the bulb out from behind the dash). Remember once the guarantee expires, you have no come back unless the matter was brought to their attention prior to the end date.(a registered letter, if they dont repair it the first time, other wise its
    “here-say” on terms of contract,after the guarantee expiry date)

    In conclusion, The punto is actually quite a decent car, the best selling car in europe! so you’ve had some bad luck, but bad luck comes with everycar these days!

    Next time get a Kia, 7 years warranty!!

    Yes, this does happen, but from reputable dealers its highly unlikely as giving a guarantee foremost on a clocked car would open them into a stream of legislative matters. They would be liable for damages pending from anyone who found that the history was incorrect. Some smaller car dealerships ( not main dealers or garages) selling off a single court yard then this could be a concern, especially if no guarantee was included. Always have someone with some car knowledge check the car over.. and im not talking about, looking around it and saying ” yes it looks fine”. Looks are very little when it comes to buying a car. A mechanic will be in the engine bay, under the car, ripping up carpets, finding the VIN numbers, Chassis numbers and searching for any reason why the car would not make a good purchase.

    At the end of the day, when buying a car privately or even from a small gargage not offering a guarantee, it is buyer beware.

    Buying privately can save you an absolute fortune though, so get the advice before you spend and always make sure you do plenty of research before handing over your hand earned money.

    Google info on cars such as ” fiat p**** problems” and find 100’s of websites of owners disscusing issues they have found with their cars.

    There are websites now in Ireland where you can pay to get a full history check on your car - costs apprx 35euro ( well worth it ).
    Includes Irish cars, and cars imported into Ireland from anywhere in the World.

Here’s something to moan about - don’t ya hate the way sales ppl, yea thats all he is, memorise a few little facts and think their God, - this is from a sales persons point voew, difference, i learn what im selling and dont spout crap from a script - Derek, you’re a muppet!!!!!!
